Basic
computer safety checklist
Make sure that Windows is fully up to date, with all available patches downloaded and installed. Configure Windows to download updates automatically.
Be sure to have current anti-virus software and an active firewall.
Install anti-spyware software. Microsoft's anti-spyware program, Windows
Defender, is reasonably effective and free.
Spy Sweeper is a good commercial product.
Use a battery backup power unit (UPS), set up to shut down the computer automatically in the event of a power failure.
Back up all your key data, including email, regularly. You should store a recent backup at a different location than the computer. The best backup system is as automated as possible.
Have a written record of all user accounts and passwords. This should not be taped to your monitor.
If you use a program that is important to you, make sure you own it. Do not depend on software for which you are not licensed. And make sure you know where all the installation disks and serial numbers are stored.
Do not open email attachments unless you are expecting them.
Never provide personal information in reply to an unsolicited email, even if it appears to be from a legitimate source. Never believe anything anyone says in an unsolicited email.
Control access to your computer.
Consider switching from Internet Explorer to Firefox.
Change the default password of any router or firewall.
